Dr. Jay Smith (President of Yellowstone Theological Institute)

A native Oklahoman, Dr. Jay Smith attended Sam Houston State University, Howard Payne University, Baylor University, Regent College, Carey Theological College, and Trinity College at the University of Bristol, England. He holds bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees in music, Christian Bible, ministry and theology. 

He is an accomplished educator, musician, composer, pastor, theologian, and administrator. He has taught at the middle school, high school, seminary, and university levels, including the United States Naval Academy, Baylor University, Carey Theological College, Howard Payne University and Yellowstone Theological Institute.

He writes instrumental and choral music, and, has authored several books, as well as chapters in collections, and numerous journal articles on the topics of theology, culture, imagination and the church. He has composed or arranged  over 500 pieces of music for band, orchestra, or chamber ensembles, and is the arranger for Montana State University’s Spirit of the West Marching Band.

He lives in Bozeman, Montana, where he lives with, Melissa, his wife of 34 years. The Smiths have two adult daughters, Catherine and Hannah.
